Getting around the ads
It sometimes happens that while watching a film, you get the strong need to... check out some online games. It happens, I know. The problem is that it takes so long to pause what you're watching, open the browser, type "new online games videos youtube" that you usually just forget about it and continue watching. Well not anymore, darlings! Check out KMPlayer!
KMPlayer is by all standards a video player, except it is also an advertising platform. When you open it you will also open a side bar that contains trailers to all sorts of browser based (or not) online games, along with an ad or two. From the list you can click on the thumb image to play the trailer or select "Play now" to be transported to a website (via Internet Explorer - no exceptions) where from you can access the game itself. This "feature" is inaptly named "KMP Games".
Another interesting feature KMP Connect. This supposedly allows you to stream videos from your computer to your mobile device. By installing KMPlayer for Android, you can access folders that you have shared via KMPlayer. As long as they're connected to the same network this should work. Except it didn't work for me. I tried to make it work for a couple times but honestly, I'm not a QC specialist at Pandora TV and therefore I gave up. I'm not that eager to watch films on my smart phone anyway.
A cool feature though is the 3D filter. You can change the way you see the movie by switching from regular 2D to side by side 3D and Top & Bottom 3D. If you have the gear necessary to enjoy these modes then good on you. Otherwise you will just get a quasi-psychedelic picture effect. It might help of you also smoked some dimethyltryptamine. Honestly though, if you can make it happen, this is probably the best that KMPlayer has to offer.
- 3D support - Creates the necessary red and blue split.
- Support for 4K/UHD resolutions - If you have big enough displays...
- Integrated codecs
- Track synchronization
- Playlist interface
- Video & Audio capturing
All in all it seems to be a well rounded video player, except...
- Ad Hoc 3D
- Decent features overall
- KMP Games is actually an ad service
- It cannot set itself as the default player - it asks to, but to no avail
- The KMP Games sidebar is always on when you launch the player (yeah, you can turn it off at least)
- Running apps crash during installation*
*Be careful and save your work before installing KMPlayer. It has a habit of making your running programs crash.
KMPlayer might have been a decent choice if it weren't for the presence of ads and sneaky third party software during installation.
